MAYS LANDING — Atlantic Cape Community College and the Atlantic Cape Foundation on Nov. 20 announced they have completed the college’s first capital campaign, raising $3.65 million in gifts and pledges.
“Create Opportunity: The Capital & Scholarship Campaign for Atlantic Cape Community College” began quietly in 2008 with a $2.5 million goal to raise funds to increase the financial assistance available to students through scholarships and purchase equipment and furnishings for the Science, Technology, Engineering & Math building under construction.
The campaign entered its “public phase” in September 2011 with the announcement of donations totaling $1.5 million. Since then, donations and pledges from the community, college employees, alumni and supporters pushed the campaign over its goal.
At a celebration luncheon at Careme’s Nov. 20, the student-run restaurant at Atlantic Cape’s Academy of Culinary Arts, Dr. Peter L. Mora, president, and Diane T. McKoy, Foundation president, thanked donors and the Campaign Cabinet members for their support.
“The single-biggest challenge to college completion is finances,” Dr. Mora said. “Atlantic Cape maintains its commitment to accessibility and affordability, but faced with the reality of today’s economy, scholarship support to help our students pay for tuition is essential.”
Student Felix Contreras of Galloway, who received the Create Opportunity Campaign Scholarship, said scholarships were integral to reaching his goal of being the first in his family to earn a college degree. He will earn three degrees from Atlantic Cape in May and plans to continue his education at the University of Pennsylvania and pursue a career in medicine.
“The scholarship represents more than just giving money. It represents to students the school does care,” said Contreras, who credits Atlantic Cape with helping him build the foundation to succeed.

Atlantic Cape established the Foundation in 1978 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity to build a broad base of financial support for its programs and services. Foundation members are drawn from local industry and small businesses and represent a broad cross-section of active leaders in the community. The Foundation has raised nearly $3 million for scholarships, Foundation operations and to enhance academic programs and the campus environment. Annually, the Foundation provides nearly $200,000 for institutional scholarships, grants and emergency help.
