COURT HOUSE – The Atlantic Cape Review, Atlantic Cape Community College’s student-run newspaper, has been recognized for journalistic excellence in the 2011-2012 New Jersey Collegiate Press Association’s journalism contest. The staff submitted entries and won three awards in the two-year college circulation division.
Corinthea Harris of Ocean City, ACR’s business manager, won second place in the News Writing Category for her article, “Pizza lures crowd but SGA doesn’t hold them” in the Winter 2012 issue. In the Feature Writing category, Devon Schmolk of Cape May Court House, staff writer, won first place for his article, “Breast cancer weakens bodies but strengthens souls in Cape May County” and staff writer Tyler Carman of North Cape May won second place for his story, “Is Graffiti Art or Vandalism?” both in the October-November 2011 issue.
“The newspaper staff has focused this school year on writing timely, news-driven stories relevant to the Atlantic Cape community as well as thoughtful features on students and faculty all the while upholding journalistic and academic rigor,” the club’s faculty advisor, Mary McWilliams, said.
“The staff, who carry full class loads, maintain jobs, and involve themselves in other school activities, have risen well to the challenge and all the club members have shown themselves to be outstanding reflections of Atlantic Cape Community College,” McWilliams said.
The winners will be honored at a seminar and awards luncheon, April 21, in South Brunswick. The event is sponsored by the New Jersey Press Foundation, a charitable arm of the New Jersey Press Association. Each winner will receive a certificate of accomplishment.
Mary McWilliams of Wildwood Crest is the faculty advisor. The Atlantic Cape Review is published monthly during the academic year, October through May, by Atlantic Cape students.
