COURT HOUSE – Atlantic Cape Community College and The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Kindertransport in the first of a series of Holocaust remembrance events to take place in March and April at Atlantic Cape’s Mays Landing Campus, 5100 Black Horse Pike.
Kindertransport survivor Ruth Fisch Kessler will be the keynote speaker in the Walter Edge Theater March 27, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. A “Meet the Author” reception will follow the presentation. Kessler is the author of The Blue Vase, her memoir as a 5-year-old member of the Kindertransport children who was transported to Great Britain in 1939, where she stayed until 1945. She later immigrated to the United States.
Kindertransport, or children’s transport, was the informal name of a series of rescue efforts that brought an estimated 10,000 refugee Jewish children to Great Britain from Nazi Germany between 1938 and 1940.
Spurred by British public opinion and the efforts of refuge aid committees, British authorities agreed to permit children under the age of 17 to enter Great Britain. Upon arrival, children were either placed with foster families or housed in hostels, schools or on farms throughout Great Britain. Most of these children would never again see their parents.
