CREST HAVEN – The “Strut like an Egyptian” Prom Fashion Show took place Feb. 27 at Cape May Technical school auditorium. The auditorium was transformed into ancient Egypt for the evening, revealing set designs, floral arrangements and music that reflected the ancient civilization.
The Key Club and National Honor Society hosted the evening. Student models strutted the runway in a fashion presentation.
“The prom fashion show is a jointly-coordinated event that is produced by the Key Club and National Honor Society,” said Sharon Lee Kustra, French teacher, Key Club advisor, and co-producer of the event. “It is completely student run under the guidance and assistance of both advisors. The goal of the endeavor is not only to fund raise but to teach students how to run a professional event themselves so that they can use this knowledge later.”
The National Honor Society students walked the fashion runway in a display of tuxedos and gowns ranging from white to royal blue. Freshman students dressed as mummies greeted guests and intermingled with the audience throughout the evening.
Community participation was integral to the event, since local merchants donated prizes and gift baskets.
National Honor Society advisor Barbara Yarger and Kustra produced the event that immersed the audience in an environment that not only celebrated ancient Egypt but displayed the creativity of all Cape Tech’s contributors.
“The Cape May Tech Key Club chapter began in the fall of 2011 with the sponsorship of the Kiwanis Club of Cape May. This is our fourth year as an organization. Active members have contributed countless hours to our many county-wide service activities and functions,” she said.
“This is our most monumental event of the year. We spend January and February planning and practicing for the show. The models, usually a group of the most high-ranking students of the senior class, are selected from members of Key Club and the National Honor Society. Dresses and tuxedoes from local prom shops are chosen for the models to wear on the runway.
“Many of the career technical shops at Cape Tech assist Key Club and NHS in several aspects like sound, lighting, hair and make up, food, and decor. Each year, the prom fashion show becomes more elaborate and includes an increasing amount of the school community,” Kustra said.
