ACCC Trustees Meet at Cape May County Campus

COURT HOUSE—Atlantic Cape Community College’s Board of Trustees met at the college’s Cape May County Campus Feb. 10 in a meeting originally set for Jan. 27 but rescheduled due to inclement weather.
In personnel matters, the board:
Appointed William Banks, Northfield, technician, information technology services, effective Feb. 11. Appointed David Pringle, Blackwood, counselor I, student support services, effective Feb. 11.
In Grant Action, the Board:
Voted to accept the 2009 Perkins Grant from July 1, 2008, through June 30 for $518,191. The goal of the grant is to strengthen academic, technical and vocational skills of students who enroll in career and technical education programs. It also provides professional development programs for teachers, counselors and administrators.
Approved the submission of a $75,000 planning grant under the Education of Language Minority Students grant from the N.J. Commission of Higher Education, from July 1 through June 30, 2011. The purpose of the grant is to enhance the instruction, learning and academic achievement of language minority students. Under the grant ACCC would serve as lead agency to facilitate a statewide professional development program for ESL faculty in the pedagogy and use of emerging instructional technology.
Approved the submission of a $30,000 planning grant under the Education of Language Minority Students grant from the N.J. Commission of Higher Education, from July 1 through June 30, 2011. The purpose of this grant is to establish clearly defined outcomes for ACCC’s seven levels of ESL, and to assess these outcomes at the end of each level.
Purchases and Contracts:
Paper and envelopes for six months. Office Basics, Boothwyn, Pa., $18,505 and Paper Mart, East Hanover, N.J., $5,076.35.
In the Presidents Report:
Dr. Peter Mora served on a panel that discussed ‘Transitions to Post-Secondary Education” at the 2008 Governor’s Conference on Workforce and Economic Development.
Chaine des Rotisseurs awarded $18,500 in scholarships to Academy of Culinary Arts students from the proceeds of its Nov. 21 Nouveau Beaujolais tasting event held in partnership with the Academy.
Brittany Williams, executive assistant to the president and director of board of trustee services, explained additions to the Board of Trustees Web site calendar, including Black History Month activities, statewide trustee events and the Feb. 20 board retreat. The retreat will include a panel of New Jersey community college leaders and a seminar on Appreciative Inquiry by consultant Jim Davy.
In other business:
Board voted to accept the Dec. 31, 2008, financial report. Therese Sampson, executive director of administration and business services, said the year-to-date margin is $1.8 million, and administration anticipates attaining the budgeted margin.
Chairperson Nick Talvacchia outlined plans to “streamline” trustee meetings and the flow of information to board members. Resolutions, committee reports and other materials will be provided electronically to trustees to cut down on paper. At the meetings, trustees will receive a binder with board materials “keyed” to the agenda.
