Lower Cape May Regional

Lower Cape May Regional High School is set to present Bob Martin and Don McKellar’s The Drowsy Chaperone as their spring musical on March 17, 18, and 19 at 7pm and March 20 at 2pm in the Paul W. Schmidtchen Theatre at Lower Cape May Regional in Erma.

This production offers 1920’s musical set amongst the backdrop of a contemporary comedy. The narrator, simply named Man in Chair, transports the audience to a 1928 Broadway theater full of laughter, music and gimmick from the “golden age” of musicals, as they watch the love story of celebrity Janet Van de Graff and Robert Martin. The comedy ensues as the Chaperone of Janet and the best man, George, try to no avail to keep the lovers away from each other on their wedding day.

This year, LAMAR has a new director, Mrs. Jen Sessa, the acting teacher at the high school. As her first year as director, Sessa expressed some obvious fears since she has not been involved in a production of this scale for some time. She would like to thank the vocal director, Sandra Beane-Fox, the choreographer, Kelly Kennedy, and the pit orchestra conductor Kaleb Magnusson for being incredibly supportive and for helping her feel more comfortable in this new position. She also credits the students involved, saying how without their skills and perseverance, the job of directing would be more difficult and definitely not as fun.

Richard Wilde serves as Man in Chair, the narrator of the show and a Broadway fanatic seeking to cure his sadness. Allison Sekela and Tyler Dodd play Janet Van de Graff and Robert Martin, respectively, as the star-crossed lovers who must work out their relationship’s needs and wants. Pamela Beane-Fox appears as The Drowsy Chaperone, Janet’s alcoholic chaperone who must keep her away from her fiancé. George, Evan Smilyk plays Robert’s best man and wedding worrywart.

Amanda Chiaro plays Mrs. Tottendale, the hostess of the wedding and her loyal employee Underling is played by Stanley Ziemba. Quinn Dougherty plays Latin-lover Aldolpho, producer Mr. Feldzieg is played by Ryan Hastings and his bubbly and air-headed accomplice Kitty is played by Sarah Portewig. Gangster #1 is Evan Warburton, while Gangster #2 is Aaron Agostini. Trix, the aviatrix, is Brittany O’Connor and the superintendent is Owen O’Brien.

The reporters are Kaitlin Poling, Maggie Paulus, and Caitlin Joyce. The Principal Dancers are Mary Drechen, Victoria Weigand, Ella Souder, Kayla Marcucci, Nauttikka Genz, Layla Freeman, and Bailey DeWeese.

The company consists of Brennah Alderfer, Katharine Beane-Fox, Nicholas Chase, Haley Christopher, Colleen Daly, Deanna DeLuca, Amanda Durbin, Carlie Eckel, Samantha Gilbert, Jacob Harkin, Naima Harris, Joshua Hedum, Kelly Henderson, Michael Hughes, Cassidy Jones, Kaitlyn Jones, Hannah Kelleher, Emery Kronemeyer, Olivia Maxlowe, Cassidy McFadden, Lillia Mitchum, Cat Moutlon, Robert Murphy, Lexi Murray, Brianne Nicholas, Andrea Paolino, Erin Piesczko, Lindsey Purvis, Eva Reichle, Amanda Rosenzweig, Maggie Roth, Sarah Stefanick, Jeramie Torres, Savanah Tozer, Destiny West, Caitlin Wiseman, and Tianna Wolf.

General admission tickets are $12, free for students and senior citizens. Jennifer Sessa directs the Drowsy Chaperone. It is produced through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, New York, New York.

Ocean City

The American Sign Language (ASL) club at Ocean City High School (OCHS) has something to party for! Deaf artist and graphic designer Ashley Shaffer will be visiting OCHS to conduct a Painting Party, using a piece of her own original artwork. She will instruct and guide participants in painting the piece step-by-step, and of course everyone will be able to take their masterpieces home at the end of the night, with all proceeds benefitting the ASL club. All art supplies, and refreshments, will be provided for a fee of $30, and the event is open to the public. No painting experience necessary!

Earlier in the day, OCHS ASL students will meet and learn about Shaffer in an assembly about Deaf Visual Image Art, often shortened to De’Via Art. Shaffer will speak to the students about where she finds inspiration for her work.

According to OCHS ASL teacher Amy Andersen, the proceeds from the Painting Party will support scholarships for seniors at OCHS who are studying ASL and who plan to continue on in sign language. Painting Party seats are limited – reserve your seat today by emailing Andersen at aandersen@ocsdnj.org.

Ocean City High School is located at 501 Atlantic Ave. in Ocean City, NJ 08226
