Cape May Tech
On February 8, the Honorable Judge Joseph Rauh, Superior Court of New Jersey, Atlantic/ Cape May Vicinage, visited the students in the Law Enforcement and Public Safety Technology program of study. The discussion included a description of the court system, family court division, question and answer session, and a fun round of ‘Jeopardy’ to test the student’s general knowledge of criminal justice.
Mr. Matthew Pleasants is the Law and Public Safety program of study instructor. Pleasants said, “The Outreach Program is designed to familiarize the students with the Superior Court of New Jersey court system and to meet an officer of the court in person. This is Judge Rauh’s third year presenting at Tech, and he has benefited our students by giving them an understanding of the importance of leading a law abiding life.”
The Law and Public Safety program of study is divided into units to provide a logical approach to understanding the operation of criminal justice and public safety in the United States. The program provides a brief overview of the entire criminal justice response to crime, the stages of the process from the commission of crime through the law enforcement response and the administration (courts and prosecution to corrections). The students receive training in criminal law, arrest, search and seizure, patrol techniques, observation and perception, civil disturbances, report writing, courtroom testimony, morals and ethics, defensive tactics, handcuffing, CPR, first aid and 911 dispatcher training.
Students, who successfully complete the program of studies requirements, can be employed as Class One Special Law Enforcement Officers in Cape May County, 911 dispatchers and earn nine college credits through an articulation agreement with Atlantic Cape Community College.
