Mr. Terry’s 8th Grade Financial Literacy Class participated in the Virtual Stock Market Same sponsored by SIFMA (Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association) and won 1st Place out of 296 teams in the Middle School Division. They aggressively turned $100,000 into $121,530.04 in a three-month span earning close to a 16 percent gain on their initial investment. Students worked as a team to find stocks, track their progress, predict patterns, and trade based on current market prices.  “We took advantage of what was going on worldwide with oil being the cheapest it’s been in many years. There is no way oil can stay at those prices forever. We researched oil companies and followed their financial patterns to decide as a team where we wanted to invest our money. It really paid off, as that’s where we made our largest returns, “ said Connor Schiela.
Cape May County Special Services
Cape May County Special Services School District’s Ocean Academy students had a blast working as a team! Students from Ms. Dougherty and Ms. Kita’s classes went to the Wildwood Convention Center and participated in the Special Olympics Unified Sports Day.
The Ocean Academy students were paired up with students from other area schools. They all got to know each other and played basketball together.
Cape Tech
Recently, seven Cape Tech seniors in the HVACR/SE (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, refrigeration, and Sustainable Energy) program of study received nationally recognized certifications.
The credentials earned include Universal Refrigerant License, R-410A Safety Certification, Pex Certification, OSHA 10 hour Construction Safety Certification, and multiple factory certifications allowing the student to buy and work on their product.
HVACR/SE is a three year consecutive program that is designed to give students the understanding and hands-on skills needed to enter into the college and career fields of Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Green Energy Applications such as Photovoltaics and Solar Water Heating.
Successful program completers will find these vast fields are growing and will continue to grow to meet global energy needs. The education and employment preparation in the fields of HVACR and Sustainable Energy will prepare students to provide installs, perform service, and create sustainable or green solutions.
Mr. Craig Miglaccio, the HVACR/ Sustainable Energy instructor, expressed, “As their Career and Technical Education teacher, I am very proud to have had the opportunity to work with these students over the last three years and to watch them succeed with these accomplishments in life.”  For additional information on the Cape May County Technical High School or the HVACR/SE program of study, visit www.capemaytech.com.
Crest Memorial
Crest Memorial School will hold its annual Fun Friday celebration May 13 from 5 to 8:30 p.m.at the school.
Fun Friday is an event for the school community that involves food, wacky relay games, music, raffles for great prizes, a carnival and a competitive kickball game.  Each year, school staff members volunteer to run the event that raises funds for two scholarships given annually to Crest Memorial School graduates.  All of the school’s students and their families are invited to participate, and many turn out to compete or enjoy the festivities as spectators.
Many local businesses have donated items and gift certificates for raffles that will be drawn near the end of the evening.  Included in the items are tickets to sporting events, local boat cruises, clothing, toys, and gift certificates to many of the area’s fine restaurants.
The scholarships that benefit from Fun Friday are the Robin Thompson Scholarship Fund, named for a 29-year Crest Memorial second-grade teacher who died of cancer in 1995, and the Peg (Ciglinsky) Rowland Scholarship Fund, named for a beloved 20-year fourth-grade teacher who died suddenly in 2012 and served as the Fun Friday coordinator for many years.
Younger participants, their siblings, and parents enjoy the event’s carnival held in the cafeteria, where they can partake in face painting and a variety of games and activities.  One  of the more popular activities is the opportunity to tape a teacher or administrator to the wall.
Students in grades 2 to 4, along with their parents, participate in a series of creative relay events in the school’s gym.  Some of these relays include the long-lost arts of skipping and Hula-hooping.
The school’s students in grades five to eight, with their parents, compete in a high-stakes kickball game run by former teacher Dave Raucci, as well as a heated tournament of “Capture the Flag.”  The winning teams get bragging rights for the remainder of the school year.
“Fun Friday is the only fundraising event held to support the two scholarship funds,” explained Jeannine Yecco, a teacher at the school who has taken over coordinating duties, “but more importantly it is a fantastic way for teachers, students, and families to spend a lighthearted evening together after nearly a year of hard work.”
