Scales and Tails is Cape May County 4-H’s Herpetology Club. Our club started in the fall of 2013 and is the only herpetology club for kids in Cape May County. Our members study and interact with reptiles and amphibians at meetings and on field trips. This year we participated in Behind the Scenes at the Cape May County Zoo Reptile House, learning about the habitats and how to care and feed the various animals. We also did the Frog Hike at Cape May Point State Park, seeing several varieties of frogs while on the hike and learning many interesting things about the local reptile and amphibian life.
Our club also participated in several community service projects this year, such as the Holly Shores Haunted Hayride which benefits the Oncology Center at the hospital (we won first prize one weekend this year). We were at the Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze in October which benefits local 4-H programs. The club participated in “Sock-It” for the Homeless during which we collected 22 packages of T-shirts and underwear and over 180 pairs of socks, which benefitted the homeless in the area as well as those people and families who have suffered financial reverses in the economy.
Scales and Tails meets on the first and third Friday of the month at 7 p.m. from the week after school starts in September until June at the Lockwood 4-H Youth Center. Membership is open to kids from kindergarten to one year out of high school. So if you are silly about snakes, frantic about frogs and just love lizards, then we are the club for you. Come join us!
