Scales and Tails is Cape May County 4-H’s Herpetology Club. Our club started in the fall 2013 and is the only herpetology club for kids in Cape May County. Our members study and interact with reptiles and amphibians at meetings and on field trips. This year, they have participated in Behind the Scenes at the Cape May County Zoo Reptile House, learning about the habitats and the care and feeding of the various animals at the zoo. They have visited the Frog Hike at Cape May Point State Park, seeing several varieties of frogs while on the hike. They also attended a Reptile Clinic with speakers from Cape May Point State Park who talked about local reptiles and amphibians and the fragile status of their habitats. A young lady brought animals that she has rescued and who are up for adoption, and the reptile curator from the Cape May County Zoo spoke about the role of zoos in captive breeding and protection of threatened and endangered reptiles and amphibians.
The Scales and Tails 4-H Club has also participated in several community service projects such as Holly Shores Haunted Hayride which benefits the Oncology Center at the hospital (we won second prize both weekends again this year), the Pumpkin Path held in October which benefits local 4-H programs, and Sock-It to the Homeless during which we collected 14 packages of T-shirts and underwear and over 150 pairs of socks, which benefited the homeless in the area as well as helped those who lost their possessions during a flooding weather event in Wildwood.
Our meetings are held on the first and third Friday of the month at 7 p.m. from September until June at the Lockwood 4-H Youth Center. Membership is open to kids from kindergarten to one year out of high school. So, if you are Silly about Snakes, Frantic about Frogs and just Love Lizards, then we are the club for you. Come join us!
West Cape May – Blaming DEI for the California wildfires is classic Trumper behavior – making an assertion with no facts or real analysis with more than a whiff of racism. But I guess they would rather do that than…
