By Jack Fichter

CAPE MAY – Santa Claus lit the 60-foot tall Christmas Tree at the Emlen Physick Estate, Sat. Nov. 20.
The Cape Harmonaires began the festivities with a 20 minute concert of Christmas Carols. Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr. welcomed visitors and residents just before Santa Claus stepped into the gazebo to hit the switch to light the tree.
Children sat on Santa’s lap and told him what they wanted for Christmas. More than one child asked for an iPod.
Warm beverages with freshly baked cookies were available in the Carriage House Tearoom & Café. The authentically decorated 1879 Emlen Physick Estate complete with Victorian Christmas vignettes was be open for free, self-guided tours.
The wonders of the season are all on display for “An Old-Fashioned Christmas Exhibit: Holiday Traditions through the Years” at the Carriage House Gallery located on the grounds of the Physick Estate, Working LGB trains weave through a Christmas village, decorated trees and old-fashioned toys recreate the traditions of Christmas past. Christmas artifacts ranging from the Victorian era through today will be on display.
The ceremony was sponsored by Sturdy Savings Bank. The event was well attended and a mild temperature of 50 degrees made the tree lighting more comfortable than in recent years.
