Sail Into Summer festival drops anchor in Stone Harbor

By On Deck Staff

Stone Harbor 24th annual Sail Into Summer weekend, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, is a fun-filled schedule of boats, pirates, hidden treasure and free family activities.
The show takes place on both 96th St. (rain or shine) and on the beach from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. May 2 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 3.
Vessels from eight to 35 feet will be on display during this land-based boat show, so you can get a look at the latest power boats, sail boats, yachts, and related accessories.
New cars and motorcycles from local dealers Kindle Auto Plaza, Burke Motor Group, Avalon Honda and others will also be on display.
The seafood part of the festival includes freshly prepared seafood, shellfish, and sides from area vendors and restaurants.
Event chair Steve Mehl promises that this year’s event will be the biggest and best ever. “Many exciting new food vendors will be on hand selling their popular dishes,” he said.
The free Family Treasure Hunt goes on throughout the festival. Just stop by the chamber office—212 96th St.—and pick up a free Treasure Hunt ticket. Then visit the list of participating stores to find your matching number and receive free merchandise from that store.
Hundreds of prizes will be given away both days, and you can play both days!
As always, for the kids 10 and under, Hoy’s 5 & 10 sponsors their treasure hunt on the beach at 96th St., May 2 at 2 p.m. Registration is from 10 a.m. – noon. Every registered treasure hunter is guaranteed to unearth a prize.
In case of inclement weather, the kids treasure hunt takes place at 1 p.m. May 3. Participants are encouraged to wear their best pirate’s gear.
Live music will be provided by various bands throughout the weekend, and an inflatable sea bounce will provide entertainment for the youngsters. There will also be free sand art necklaces to the first 250 children.
If you think you have the best chowder around, the festival offers you a chance to prove it. The annual Stone Harbor Chamber of Commerce Chowder Contest takes place May 2.
All chowder entries must arrive fully cooked in a crock pot and be brought to the tent in front of the chamber office by 11:45 a.m.
The contest is free to enter and the three most popular chowders will be awarded prizes.
If you would rather be a chowder taster, come to the tent outside the chamber office at noon on Saturday, and you can taste all the delicious chowders and cast your vote for the best.
