Religious History Topic of County Clerk’s Archives Day Presentation

Archives Day

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – Recognizing the religious community has had a social, political and economic impact on Cape May County the County Clerk hosted the 12th Annual Archives Day exhibit and presentation entitled “Revival, Rebellion, and Redemption:  The Religious Community’s Impact on Cape May County History.” The event was held Oct. 19 at the Historic Courthouse here.
County Clerk and County Historian Rita Marie Fulginiti opened the program stating that “In the beginning settlements of Quakers were clustered at the North, Baptists in the Center and Presbyterians in the South of what became Cape May County.  Before 1798 these places were called Upper Precinct, Middle Precinct and Lower Precinct until the Legislature formed them into Townships, still separated by religious lines.  Out of these three municipalities the other 13 municipalities in the county were eventually formed.”
Public Records Clerk Laurie Boyd Thomas spoke about how Cape May County settlers intertwined their lives, business, local politics with their faith.   “Separation of Church and State was practically non- existent for early residents” Thomas said.  Thomas’ presentation, gleaned from the County Clerk’s Public Records Archives, focused on the county’s early Quakers, Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodists, Jews and Roman Catholics.  A copy of the presentation is available at this link:  http://www.capemaycountyarchives.com/oprslite/Presentations.htm
“Each Archives Day we celebrate the unique treasures found in our historical records collections maintained in the County Clerk’s Archives…There is always something to discover from our past,” Fulginiti said.
