CAPE MAY – Fifty-four-year-old Cape May resident Theresa Spear battled type I diabetes all her life. The disease severely impacted her organs and left her with a failing kidney. Referred to Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, the only solid organ transplant center in southern New Jersey, Spear had a life-saving kidney-pancreas transplant in August 2015.
In an effort to give back, Spear recently shared her story about undergoing a kidney-pancreas transplant during a free event at Congress Hall. Spear was joined by Gwen Lupton, RN, BSN, kidney/pancreas transplant coordinator at Lourdes, who spoke about the clinical care needed to treat kidney disease and kidney-pancreas transplant.
Spear is now feeling healthy and grateful. Through this event, she hopes she helped others understand the difference organ donation makes and how it saved her life.
