Christmas Lessons, Carols Set at Church

By Press Release

CAPE MAY — Cape May’s First Presbyterian Church and Episcopal Church of the Advent will offer a traditional service of Christmas lessons and carols on Sun., Dec.19, at 4 p.m. The service will include a new setting of “Comfort Ye My People” by local composer Jane Sbarra.
The choirs of both congregations will come together at Church of the Advent, on the corner of Washington and Franklin streets. The Advent Bells, the Joyful Ringers of the Cape May Presbyterian Church and the Cape May County Recorder Consort, will join them.
As a special treat the service will include the premier of a new choral work by Sbarra. She will offer a four part choral fugue using the text “Comfort Ye My People.” This new piece will make an already special occasion even more so.
A reception will follow in the adjoining Parish Hall. All are welcome and admission is free. Just bring your voice and ears. Carol Obligado of Cape May who is the organist and choir director for both congregations will lead the choirs.
The service of lessons and carols follows a very old format from England with readings that recount the prophesies and then tell the story of the birth of Jesus. Between each of the readings there will be anthems and carols for the choirs and the congregation.
The musicians and congregations of both Cape May Presbyterian and Episcopal Church of the Advent invite all to join them for the service and the reception that follows.
