CAPE MAY – In 1936 two mothers gathered their children in an old rowboat on the beach. From that humble beginning eighty years ago the Cape May Beach Sunday School was organized. Those two mothers recognized that Sunday was a day of worship but without transportation and no churches within walking distance they began a regular Sunday tradition of singing songs and telling Bible stories for their families.
As the group grew their regular worship was moved to the Town Bank Property Owners Clubhouse on Clubhouse Drive. Then in 1939 enough money was collected to purchase a tract of land on Clubhouse Drive between Elwood Road and Folsom Avenue. A small one roomed chapel was constructed back in the trees. Additions and improvements have been made to the chapel throughout the years, including making it handicapped accessible, but the Chapel remains non-denominational with volunteer leadership and friendly atmosphere.
An open invitation is given to everyone – come worship the Lord at Cape May Beach Sunday School which meets every Sunday from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend at 9:30 a.m. The typical morning worship begins with singing hymns, choruses and children’s songs, a missionary report, Bible reading and prayer. The children then go into a separate room for a Bible lesson and activity. The adults remain in the main room for a Bible lesson presented by one of our speakers who inspire all in attendance.
It does not matter if you are a full-time resident, a summer resident or a weekend visitor – a hearty welcome awaits you. Be sure to listen for the Church Bell at 9:30 a.m. indicating it is time for service at Cape May Beach Sunday School from May 29 through Sept. 4, 2016.
