Advent Church Plans Evensong, Reception Nov. 14

By Press Release

CAPE MAY — The Episcopal Church of the Advent at Washington and Franklin streets will host a traditional Choral Evensong service at 4 p.m. on Sun., Nov.14. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. All are welcome to join.
“Evensong” is a traditional set of prayers and scripture lessons set to music and sung by a choir and congregation.
The service offered by Church of the Advent will use prayers, music and language in use since the 16th Century in the Anglican tradition.
The Rev. John Mitchell, rector of the Advent, noted that the service is, “simple and over the centuries has appealed to those who want a time to reflect or simply to pray.”
The tradition has appealed to those who enjoy the music or wanted a time to be still. In some places the service was popular with those who were unable to attend Sunday services as a result of having to work.
The congregation will be led in this service by the choir of Church of the Advent under the direction of Carol Obligado, organist and choir director. Music will include works of David McWilliams and C.V. Stamford and W. Lawes.
A reception and time to gather will follow in the Parish Hall next door to the Church. Evensong is offered as part of regular series of Sunday Advent afternoon events of music or prayer, mostly on the second Sunday of each month. Whatever your background, all are welcome.
