120 Years of Gospel Preaching

Church’s most senior member Marion Mouklas

By Deborah Rogish

NORTH WILDWOOD – On April 6-8, Pastor Bob Rogish and congregation of the First Baptist Church of Anglesea celebrated its 120th anniversary.
Pastor Tony Facenda of Nags Head, N.C., was the guest speaker for the weekend festivities.
A special service was held April 6 at 7 p.m., commemorating the church’s beginning. Several readings and reminiscences were given. Wilbur Ostrander recalled the men and women who gave their time, energies, and funds to build the present building.
In 1885, a group of people began meeting for Biblical instruction in the parlor of the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse.
Lighthouse keeper Freeling Hewitt organized and supervised the Sunday school.
1n 1898, the people filed for incorporation as the First Baptist Church of Anglesea at the corner of Third and Pennsylvania avenues.
The present building was erected on the same location in 1973. The stained-glass window from the first building (1899) was preserved and placed in the front of the new building, where it stands today.
The oldest member, Marion Shivers Mouklas, is 97.
Today, the church family still stands on the foundation laid by those farsighted saints as a beacon for Jesus Christ, the Bible, and furthering the vision to reach our community with the Gospel.
The public is invited to visit and see.
