The Title Company of Jersey is pleased to announce that Bill Gillingham has just completed his 40th year at TCJ.
Bill started his career with TCJ on Feb. 28, 1977. He celebrated with Northfield staffers with a lunch held in his honor on the same day 40 years later.
William P. Gillingham (fondly referred to as Mr. Bill) started in the title insurance industry with Chelsea Title and Guaranty Company of Northfield. In 1973, he co-founded the American Suburban Title Agency, where he worked as the Title Underwriter & Examiner until joining TCJ in 1977.
His expertise is all facets of the industry are not only reflected in the employees he has mentored over the years but in the marketplace he has serviced. Countless commercial bankers, attorneys, title underwriters, realtors and locals, as well as national developers, have relied on Bill’s knowledge over the decades.
His initial draw to the specialized area of Riparian and Tideland Title rights was a new area of title underwriting that impacted the coastal areas of Atlantic and Cape May counties during the start of the casino era. It was a new challenge in how to identify, resolve and insure tidal areas that were in question with the State of New Jersey.
Over the years, Bill has established himself as one of the senior title underwriters in the southern New Jersey region as well as the premier expert in tidelands/riparian issues in the state of New Jersey.
When asked what the most rewarding part of the business has been over the years, Bill responded, “Being a part in some small way to the completion of large commercial transactions or solving a problem to clear the way for a first time home buyer.” He also shared that the most significant change in the title insurance industry is, by far, technology. Nothing has changed the industry as much as the speed and accuracy of new technology.
In the future, Bill sees himself continuing his consulting and underwriting duties until such time the job is no longer satisfying or challenging.
