When it comes to choosing a real estate agent to buy or sell your home, it’s important to do some “shopping” around rather than settling for the first one you find. Doing your research will help you find an agent you can trust, are comfortable with and feel has your best interests in mind. Here are some questions to ask to help determine if a real estate agent is right for you.
1. May I have contact information for some of your recent clients?
Talking to the agent’s recent clients is a great starting point. Get their opinions on working with this agent and ask if they would work with him or her again. If the agent is hesitant to give out this information, he or she might have something to hide.
2. How long have you been in the real estate business?
Typically, the longer an agent has been in the business, the more experienced he or she is. Although the amount of time in a field doesn’t always guarantee skill, much of real estate is learned on the job.
3. Can I see your real estate license and any additional designations or certifications?
Asking to see the agent’s license ensures it’s current and he or she isn’t scamming you. Better safe than sorry! Additional designations or certifications earned through specialized training help strengthen the agent’s credentials, as well as determine specific skills the agent can apply to your particular real estate needs. If you’re buying a home, look for ABR® (Accredited Buyer’s Representative).
4. What is the local market like?
Make sure the agent is knowledgeable about the real estate in the area you’re buying or selling in.
5. Do you have relationships with any mortgage lenders, home repairmen, etc.?
Agents should be able to recommend these types of service providers for your convenience. Additionally, things tend to go a bit more smoothly if agents already have an established relationship with these service providers.
6. What’s your business philosophy when it comes to real estate?
The agent’s answer will help you discover what’s important to him or her and determine if the agent’s goals agree with your own.
7. What’s the average variation between your initial offers and final sales prices?
This will indicate the agent’s ability to negotiate.
Some tips: Don’t rush – interview as many agents as you feel necessary; don’t be afraid to ask questions; and go with your gut!
