“What’s Happening in Ocean City”

OCEAN CITY – The Memorial Day Weekend begins at noon, Friday, May 27 at the 9th St. Beach opposite the Music Pier. Mayor Gillian plus former and present Lifeguards will meet for the traditional turning of the key to “open the ocean.”
Following the key turning, a large group of folks dressed in business attire, some toting brief cases, will do “their thing.” Yes, it will be time once again for the Business Person’s dramatic march into the Ocean to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance.
This spectacle will be led by Chairman John Walton of Century 21 Real Estate. John estimates a record turnout of 100 participants bolstered by a contingent of 46 children all of whom have vowed to become future business persons in Ocean City.
A contingent of costumed characters will participate including Trash Buster, the City’s Canned Crusader and recycling symbol and Martin Z. Mollusk. In addition to the MZM character, the real Martin Z. Mollusk, the hermit crab himself, will drop by to observe and authenticate the turning of the key. Martin will also be carried to the Ocean by Trash Buster and dip his claws into the water to officially start the march. Suzanne Muldowney, aka Shelley the Mermaid will represent the International Mermaids Assn.
Walton reports an array of dignitaries have already signed to enter the drink including Christopher Maloney, director of the Ocean City Free Public Library, Walt Homan, owner of Ward’s Pastries, Doug Jewell, aka Arrgh the Pirate of Air Circus, and Todd and Jen Dwyer, owners of a boardwalk family restaurant plus numerous members of the Chamber of Commerce. The Cumberland Regional High School Chorus will also perform as will the World’s Only Wind Chimes Band of Ocean City.

On May 28, the Ocean City Fire Department holds it Beach Volley Ball Tournament to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event is set for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the 5th St. Volley Ball Courts. Four person coed teams will compete in Recreational and Competitive Divisions. There will be prizes for the top two teams in each division and an after party with music and buffet. On May 28 Craft for a Cause to benefit the Japan Earth Quake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Effort will be held at Kidz Creations, 811 Asbury Ave. between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Kids will decorate a special piggy bank to take home. The activity will help children understand the importance of both saving money and participating in charitable acts.
All proceeds from the project will be donated to the Red Cross to help provide food, shelter and medical supplies for the people of Japan. The cost of the workshop is $15 and includes all materials. Call 609-399-9922 or 302-981-4133.

On Memorial Day, May 30 at 9:15 a.m.on the Moorlyn Terrace Beach, Lifeguards will row a short distance from the beach and place a Wreath on the Atlantic Ocean to remember all of the men and women who sacrificed their lives so that we can live free.
Ocean City’s Annual Memorial Day Service is set for 11 a.m., May 30th at Veterans Memorial Park 5th and Wesley Ave. Bad Weather Service will be held in the Tabernacle Auditorium, 5th and Wesley Ave.
