TOWN BANK – The Cape May Beach Property Owners Association (POA) and local post offices were among the organizations in Cape May County that rallied to support the Coast Guard community when members went without paychecks during the partial government shutdown.
At its January meeting, a $1,000 donation was approved by the POA to aid Coast Guard families. On Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 21) the first round donation was delivered to the Coast Guard Training Center, Cape May, according to a release.
That “Day of Service” included $1,375 cash as well as paper supplies, cleaning supplies, and non-perishable food.
The second round of donations, which totaled $290, was delivered Jan. 26 by Dean Umscheid, president, and Jerry Fowler, assistant secretary-treasurer of the POA.
Umscheid, who is also affiliated with the U.S. Postal Service, delivered $260 from the Court House Post Office and $200 from the Cape May Post Office to the Coast Guard.
Rio Grande Post Office held an employee food drive and added food, cleaning and paper products to the food pantry at the base.
“Any third-round now will be on hold pending what happens with any additional shutdown,” Umscheid told the Herald Jan. 28.
