NORTH WILDWOOD – On Dec. 7 at noon, the North Wildwood VFW Post 5941 will conduct a Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration Ceremony to honor all those who served in World War II. It is also an important reminder of the sacrifices all of our military personnel make every day.
It has been 71 years since the horrific attack on Pearl Harbor that resulted in our declaring war on the Empire of Japan. Today we recall how, shortly before 8 a.m. on a beautiful Sunday morning, 360 Japanese warplanes bombed the US Naval Base near Honolulu. In less than two hours, 2,500 Americans were killed and 1,000 more were wounded on the “date that will live in infamy,” as President Franklin D. Roosevelt characterized it.
The Ceremony is a brief, solemn event of prayer and patriotic song, held every year at St. Demetrios Church, 321 St. Demetrios Avenue and the Hereford Inlet Seawall.
A memorial wreath is tossed into the water as “Taps” is played.
Mayor Bill Henfey said, “It’s our duty to remember the tragedy that propelled us into the war. It’s our honor to express our gratitude to all the heroes who brought us through the war with our freedom intact.”
