Orthodox Christian Service to Celebrate Blessing of Sea

NORTH WILDWOOD — Rev. Seven J. Vlahos, pastor of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, invites all Cape May County Orthodox Christians to join him and his congregation as they observe and celebrate the feast day of the Repose/Dormition/Metastasis/Assumption of the Ever-Virgin Mary on Sun., Aug. 14 and Mon., Aug. 15. This feast day is set aside to remember, recall, and commemorate the life, death, and assumption to Heaven of the Virgin Mary.
The Orthodox Church is the oldest Christian-based community that dates back to Jerusalem and the Apostles. The Virgin Mary is remembered as “Theotokos,” the mother, or birth-giver, of Jesus Christ. The Orthodox Church honors Mary because she was chosen by God to give birth to His Son.
The Great Vesper service will be held on Sun., Aug. 14 at 7 p.m., followed by the chanting of the Encomiums t the Theotokos. On Mon., Aug. 15, the Orthros service will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the Divine Liturgy at 9:30 a.m., and Holy Communion at 10:30 a.m. The Blessing of the Loaves service the Encomiums, the Holy Water Blessing of the Atlantic Ocean and homily will follow.
A reception will be held in the community center.
