Organist Retires, Ends 20 Years at First Baptist

By Press Release

WILDWOOD – First Baptist Church of Wildwood, honored Aroxie “Roxie” Spriggs for her nearly 20 years of service as organist and director of music.
At the Feb. 2 service, the choir anthem and all hymns sung were favorites chosen by Spriggs, for her final performance prior to retirement.
Two of her grandchildren, Emilie and Sophie, performed “How Great Thou Art” in sign language. Her late husband, the Rev. Forrest Spriggs, was pastor of Cape Island Baptist Church in Cape May, for over 40 years. Spriggs also played organ during Sunday services at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May for over 20 years.
After the service, in her honor, a luncheon was served of homemade soups and sandwiches.
Three of Sprigg’s four children attended, and spoke to the congregation about their mother’s lifetime of Christian service through music. They included Mildred Hermann, wife of Rev. Stephen Hermann, formerly of North Wildwood United Methodist Church, Carol Tanghare, nurse practitioner at Deborah Heart and Lung Center, and John Spriggs, from Cape Christian Academy and Cub Scout Troop 84.
Commemorative compact disc recordings of Roxie’s music are available from the First Baptist Church of Wildwood for a small donation. All proceeds will be used to fund an annual scholarship in Sprigg’s name to Cape Christian Academy, where her son John has served as Administrator since 2008.
To order a CD, contact the church office at 609-522-2981.
