October 17 through the 23 is National School Bus Safety Week.
In an effort to educate the public about the school bus law and penalties and remind motorists to stop for school buses the South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance has erected roadside banners throughout the region.
Teresa Thomas, program manager for the Alliance said “As in every driving situation, motorists need to take a deep breath and obey the law. In this particular situation we are talking about the life of a child and they should be worth those couple of minutes we have to stop our vehicles.”
The law requires motorists to stop for school buses when the flashing red lights are on. Motorists should stop at least 25 feet away from the bus, in each direction, and remain stopped until the lights go off.
Passing a school bus when it is picking up children or discharging children carries the highest point violation (five points).
