COURT HOUSE – Midlantic Construction, LLC, Barnegat, New Jersey, is scheduled to close Ocean Drive (County Road No. 621) Bridge over Middle Thorofare Feb. 22, between the City of Cape May and at the Borough of Wildwood Crest, to repair Superstorm Sandy damage at the north abutment of the bridge.
The work requiring the bridge to be closed to vehicular traffic consists of installing steel sheet piling in the vicinity of the north abutment (where the roadway meets the bridge). Due to the narrow width of the bridge, the contractor is unable to maintain traffic and install the sheeting. The roadbed in the area of the north abutment is also being reconstructed during the bridge closure period.
Other work being performed under the construction contract consists of installing stone-filled mattresses to protect the slope about the abutment. Grout is being pumped into the abutment to fill voids discovered after Superstorm Sandy.
This project is meant to armor the slopes about the north abutment to prevent the loss of the embankment material and contain the fill within the abutment.
The work is being performed under a $291,322.84 construction contract. The project is partially being funded under the Federal Highway Administration Emergency Relief Program with money set aside for Superstorm Sandy repairs.
The bridge, also locally referred to as “Two Mile Bridge”, will be closed to all pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicular traffic from Feb. 22 and will reopen on or before March 4.
The design engineer for the project is Santec Consulting Services, Inc., Wall, New Jersey. The construction inspection is being performed by Gibson Associates, PA., Ocean View.
