OCEAN CITY — If you see a lot of students, teachers and neighbors wearing blue-and-yellow T-shirts on Mon. (March 21), you’ll know it’s World Down Syndrome Day.
Two Ocean City residents who are moms to young children with Down Syndrome, Jen Polcini and Melissa Flink, are helping to raise awareness in Ocean City about the global event with a theme this year of “My Friends, My Community.”
Polcini and Flink designed T-shirts and sent out flyers to Ocean City Primary School faculty and students to solicit support for the cause. They have sold more than 175 shirts to date, and all proceeds will be donated to Ocean City Recreation Department programs for children with disabilities.
They are asking people to wear their T-shirts or to wear blue and yellow (the colors associated with Down Syndrome awareness) on Monday in support of the day. They also will send a kid-friendly Down Syndrome fact sheet home with Primary School students on Fri. (March 18).
The City of Ocean City will turn the lights on the Route 52 causeway blue and yellow on Mon. in honor of World Down Syndrome Day.
“Melissa and I feel so blessed by our kids and to live in a community that supports people with disabilities,” Polcini said. “Just last summer, we watched people from our community (Carrie Merritt and Lisa Rumer) be recognized on a national level for their dedication to Special Olympics. The Ocean City Recreation Department started three different recreation programs (swimming, fishing and gardening) for children with disabilities. Exciting things are happening here in Ocean City.”
