WILLIS, MAX BARRY, 82 – of Rio Grande, NJ passed away peacefully on August 28, 2017. Max was born Oct. 26, 1934 to the late David and Georgia (Gaskill) Willis of Harkers Island, NC. After graduating from Beaufort High School in NC, Max joined the United States Coast Guard in August of 1952. He served proudly and honorably for 26 years, including service in the Vietnam War. Other notable contributions were as Commander of the Townsend’s Inlet Station in NJ, as well as commanding the 82 footer “Point Francis” in Sandy Hook, NJ. At his retirement in March 1979, Max held the highest enlisted grade of E9, rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. After retirement he was employed as a mate on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry from 1980-1993.
Max is survived by his wife Joan (Lee) of 55 years; daughters Rita and Brenda Willis; grandchildren Jessica, Alana, Jonathon, Melissa, Alexine, and Delaney; great granddaughter Kenley; nieces Rachel and Glenda; and nephew Glenn. He was loved by all and we will miss him greatly.
He is predeceased by his son John, granddaughter Andrea, and brothers Willard and Glenn.
In his last years, Max enjoyed his afternoon time with fellow veterans at the DAV and the VFW, where he was a life member.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 12 noon at the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, 127 Crest Haven Road, CMCH, NJ. A Celebration of Life will follow at VFW Post 5343, 6 East Delaware Pkwy., Villas, NJ 08251. Memorial donations may be made to VFW Post 5343. Condolences at www.radzieta.com
