WARREN, EVELYN WARD, 93, of Cape May Court House, NJ, artist and community leader, died July 25, 2013. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband John H. Warren, Jr. (Jack). Born in 1920 in New York City to Perley Erik Ward and Susanna Knight Ward, Evelyn grew up in Wyncote, PA and Stone Harbor, NJ. After graduating from Cheltenham High School in 1937, and Thompsons Business School in 1939, Evelyn began working at the Farm Journal Magazine, where her father was President. Evelyn and Jack, also of Wyncote, married in 1943 shortly after Jack was drafted into the US Army. During Jacks deployment to the European Theater, Evelyn worked at Brown Instrument Co. in the Research and Development Program. When Jack, a Purple Heart recipient, returned home in 1944, Evelyn left her professional career and devoted her life to family and community. Evelyn served on the Executive Boards of the Huntingdon Valley Library, Lower Moreland High School PTA, and the Womens Club of Huntingdon Valley, where she served as President from 1969-1971. She served as Vice President and Newspaper Editor of the Mother’s Club of Huntingdon Valley. In 1959, Evelyn became certified by the Library of Congress as a Braille transcriber, and transcribed mathematics books for sight impaired students through the Volunteer Service for the Blind. She initiated a program in the community to screen children for Amblyopia, a vision disorder. In 1976, when Jack retired as President of Warren Knight Co. in Philadelphia, Avalon became their permanent home. During Evelyn’s “retirement years” she volunteered at the local hospital in charge of the Art Gallery. She co-chaired Avalon Art Shows, Annual Flower Shows, and served 8 years as Secretary to the Avalon Performing Arts committee. She also served as President of the Avalon Book Club, on the Ethics Committee of Avalon Borough, the Mayor’s Advisory Committee, the Avalon Civic Club, and on the financial committee of the Avalon Methodist Church. With a lifelong love of the seashore and its wildlife, Evelyn enjoyed volunteering at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor. The Arts were a consistent thread through Evelyns life, and she has won top state honors in Senior Art Shows. She excelled at swimming, tennis, and sewing, and was a championship golfer and bridge player. Never idle, always moving forward, Evelyn remained active and engaged her entire life. Evelyn is survived by her four children, John Warren of Solebury, PA, Suzanne Walterick of Levittown, PA, Patricia Moses of Somers Point, NJ, and Richard Warren of Southampton, NY. Their wives and husbands, along with Evelyns eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren will always remember their loving Mom and Grandmom. Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Avalon on Thursday, August 22 at 11am. Interment at the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery. Please visit www.radzieta.com for condolences.
