VOLKMAN, ROBERT R., Sr., age 88, of Wilmington, Delaware died Saturday, April 7, 2012 at home. Bob and his wife Jane loved traveling to their house in Cape May Point to relax in the casual atmosphere of “The Point”. He would always say he could begin to unwind as soon as they crossed the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Retiring early, at age 57, allowed Bob and Jane to spend considerable time in Cape May and sampling most of the restaurants in lower and middle townships. Bob & Jane especially liked a relaxing meal and manhattan at the Lobster House. Bob was a graduate of PS duPont High School, received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware in 1949, and later received his Professional Engineer License. Bob served our country as a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps where he was the rank of a Captain. After WWII, Bob worked for Wilmington Trust in the Accounting Department, was a designer for Gronemeyer, then spent 30 years at DuPont in the Design Division working on HVAC and textile fibers projects. His last position was Senior Project Engineer at Louviers. Bob was active in many organizations including, St Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 361st Fighter Group, Assoc. of Professional Engineers, and the P-51 Mustang Pilots Association. He is survived by his wife Jane Coucill Volkman of Wilmington; son Robert Volkman, Jr. and wife Mary Theresa of Wilmington with daughters Julie and Jackie; daughter Sandy Volkman Miller and husband Garry of Lake Harmony, PA with daughter Carey and son Brad; son Gregrey Volkman and wife Connie of Williamsburg, VA with daughter Sarah and son Jed. Mr. Volkman is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Morgan, Liam and Finnegan. Memories and condolences may be shared with Bobs daughter, Sandy, at svm@aspeninnovate.com Services were held at MCCRERY & HARRA Funeral Home in Wilmington, DE. In honor of Bob’s distinguished military career, interment was held at the Delaware Veteran’s Cemetery.
