SYKES, JEANNE D., 89, of Avalon, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2017 at the Brookdale Nursing Home in Cape May Court House. She was born in Roxborough, PA on May 1, 1928. She relocated to Cape May County in 1949 with her husband and love of her life, John W. Sykes Jr. She was a graduate of Penn State University and taught English and Spanish for 42 years with 37 of them at Middle Township High School. She loved all of her students and had a special place in her heart for the MTHS class of 1962 in which she was their class advisor. Her hobbies were gardening, yard sales, and watching her grandchildren at all their sporting events. Her family meant the most to her. Jeanne was predeceased by her husband, John W. Sykes, Jr., 1970, and her son David Sykes, 1989. She is survived by her children Susan (Frank) Butterworth, John (Valerie) Sykes, Stephen (Suzanne) Sykes, Leslie (Fred) Sykes. Also survived by 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Avalon located at 3344 Dune Drive, Avalon, NJ. Memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. A gathering will take place for family and friends after the Service.
