STILL, JR., SAMUEL LEON

STILL, JR., SAMUEL LEON, 79 – of North Cape May (formerly Pennsville) passed away on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017 from a high level, aggressive form of lymphoma B. He was born in Salem, NJ to the late Samuel Leon Still, Sr. and Mildred Walburn Still. Along with his parents he is predeceased by his sister Eleanor Lyons.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary (nee Gowdy) Still, his children Pam (Daryl) Halter of Cohansey, NJ, Sandie (Kenny) Seitz of Millersville, MD, Samuel Leon, III, of Fayetteville, NC, grandchildren, Scott (Gayle) Cooksey of Pennsville, NJ, Anna Halter of Cohansey, NJ, Mary Halter of Scottsdale, AZ, Kayla Henderson of Pennsville, NJ, Mackenzie Hankins of Absecon, NJ, Chris Emano of Centreville, VA, Megan Still of Greenville, NC, and great grandchildren Kendall Cooksey & Lucas Cooksey of Pennsville, NJ.
Sam worked in his father’s plumbing business in Penns Grove, NJ, before getting a job as a pipefitter at DuPont Chambers Works, Deepwater, in 1960. He retired in 1996.
He began SCUBA diving in 1966 and was captain of his own dive boat a few years later. Besides the lobsters and flounders he caught, Sam also discovered 4 or 5 wrecks and brought up treasures, including a ship’s bell and helm from the Loretta, various port holes, and several pieces of china. One of his favorites was a small carved bisque figurine called a Frozen Charlotte.
When he retired his dive boat in 2002, he began working as a first mate on fishing boats and enjoyed fishing and participating in the annual Mako Tournaments in the Cape May area. He fished until almost the very end of his life.
Sam enjoyed traveling to Florida with his wife during the winter months and did that for 21 years. He was also active in the Tabernacle UMC in Erma, NJ, and the Westside Church in Ft. Pierce, FL. He loved studying the Bible and he loved telling jokes, as all his friends and family well know.
Visitation will be Friday, October 13, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Ave., Cape May Court House, NJ 08210.
