SPENCE, JOSEPH HENRY

SPENCE, JOSEPH HENRY, 91, passed away on April 13, 2017. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. Joseph enjoyed the beach life, where he spent the past thirty (30) years of his life living in Cape May Court House, New Jersey. Prior to Cape May Court House, he resided in Avalon, NJ, and Fort Washington, PA. His two daughters, Suzanne Spence (Michele Pugmire) of Memphis, TN, and Jodie Levenson (Albert) of Malvern, PA, survive him. In addition to his daughters, Joseph also leaves four grandchildren: David Altman, Laura Levenson Winning, Samantha Levenson and Aaron Levenson. His wife of 57 years, Helen M. Price Spence, and daughter, Karen Altman, of Greensburg, Pa, preceded him in death. Joseph was born and raised in Germantown, PA, in 1925 to Henry and Charlotte Spence. He graduated from Germantown High School. He was proud to have served his country as a World War II Army veteran as an infantry soldier who fought in the European theatre and the historic Battle of the Bulge. He was an active member of American Legion #0031 and participated in Memorial Day parades until the age of 89. After the war, he attended and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business and worked at Wyeth Laboratories while attending school. He worked at Montgomery Publishing Company where he began as a Junior Accountant and worked his way up to Chief Financial Officer. He was a member of Kiwanis Club, and served on the Upper Dublin Parks and Recreation Board. He enjoyed a variety of passions in life, including spending time with his family, traveling, woodworking, oil painting, collecting and reading historical books, collecting transfer ware, fishing, and collecting antiques and researching family history. A celebration of Life service will be held at St. Marys Episcopal Church, Stone Harbor, NJ on June 3, 2017 at 11:00 am.www.maugergivnish.com
