Obituary

SHUMAN, SHAWN L., 46

SHUMAN, SHAWN L., 46, lifelong Cape May area resident, passed away unexpectantly on June 13, 2017. Shawn attended Lower Cape May Regional High School and ACCC, graduating with an Associate’s Degree and Culinary Degree. Always a talented, hard worker, Shawn served as head chef in several local restaurants including Stone Harbor Country Club, The Lobster House, and Golden Inn. He then changed career paths and became a commercial fisherman, working with several Cape May and Atlantic County fleets. Shawn’s talents were genuine; whether preparing for a banquet or a meal for his family, he thrived in any kitchen. His fishing career and love of the ocean provided Shawn the opportunity to work with some of the best, including most recently, his brother Darren on the Captain Jessie.

Shawn is predeceased by his loving mother, Eleanor Grace Shuman (nee St. John) and his grandmother, Eleanor St. John. Shawn is loved deeply and will be dearly missed by his loving family which includes his wife of 24 years, Desiree (nee Sangillo); three sons, Shawn Jr., Joshua and Jacob; four siblings, Desiree Shuman Luongo, Ralph Shuman, Kevin Shuman and Darren Shuman; many nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, dear friends, and his best four legged friend, Butters.

Shawn lived life on his own terms. He loved his family with a big heart, with devotion and with self-sacrifice. Although Shawn lived 46 short years, he lived large! He enjoyed life with his boys, good food and drink, country music, cooking, fishing, the ocean, camping, a big bonfire, coffee, Tastykake Chocolate Juniors and a cold glass of milk, playing Monopoly, his Mother’s lasagna, all the holidays, especially Christmas … Shawn was the best “SANTA!”

Shawn’s viewing will be held on Monday (June 19th) from 6pm to 7pm in the Spilker Funeral Home, 815 Washington St., Cape May with his funeral ceremony beginning at 7pm. Shawn will be buried with his beloved Mother at a later date. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are greatly appreciated to the Shuman Family Fund with checks payable to Shawn’s sister: Desiree Luongo / mailing address: 44 Zion Drive, Berlin, NJ 08009.
