PEARSON, MILDRED (MITTIE), 89, of Avalon, NJ, and Newtown Square, PA, passed away on January 24, 2014 in Dunwoody Village Care Center after a long illness. She was born to the late John and Mildred (Flubacher) Barron, December 13, 1924 in Woodbury, NJ. Mittie graduated from Haddonfield Memorial High School in 1942 and received a BA from Mount Holyoke College in 1946 and an MA in Reading Education from Rowan University in 1976. Mittie was an elementary school teacher until she retired in 1989 and was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. She was a consultant for Interning for Learning programs from 1973 until her retirement. Mittie was an active member of Avalon Yacht Club and also was a member of the Avalon Garden Club, Civic Club, Performing Arts Council, and a trustee of the Avalon Museum and Historical Society. She loved to travel with her husband, Davis, and to spend time in Grenada each winter. But you could always find Davis and Mittie at AYC anytime during the summer! Mittie is survived by her husband, Davis, her children Karen Festi (Al) of Port Charlotte, FL; John Quay (Barbara) of Easton, PA; Susan Brown (Peter) of Avalon; and daughter-in-law Pam Quay of Ocean View, NJ. She also is survived by grandchildren Michael Festi (Jenny) of Bear, DE; Trish Hoffman (Bruce) of Alexandria, VA; Tara Hesslein (Tom) of Toms River, NJ; Bryan Quay (Karin) of Galloway Twp., NJ; Katie Mick (Fred) of Cape May Court House, NJ; and Amy Smoragiewicz (Stephen) of Summit, NJ; and great grandchildren Jack, Gavin, Morgan, Matthew, Stephen, Kyle, Anna, Cooper, and Sophie. Also surviving is her sister Mariella Oliver of Annapolis, MD; and her step-children Leslie Jessell, Davis Pearson, Jr. (Lisa), and Don Pearson (Gail). Mittie was predeceased by her son Ronald Quay and first husband, Robert C. Quay. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Ave., Cape May Court House, NJ. A Memorial Gathering for a celebration of Mitties life will be held at a future date.
