OLSEN, HOWARD P. “MICKEY”, 86, of Cape May passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, August 1, 2013. Moving here from Ridgefield, Mickey has been a resident of Cape May since 1975. A man of honor, he served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war he joined the Merchant Marines and was a 3rd Mate of Steam and Motor Vessels. While in Ridgefield, Mickey was a dedicated and a longtime volunteer firefighter. Mickey and his wife, Geri, were the well-known proprietors of Olsen’s Sew and Vac in Rio Grande, NJ and Singer of Cape May Court House. In his earlier years, Mickey worked within the textile industry in New York City. Mickey will be long-remembered for his strong leadership, hard work, dedication and commitment to his family and community. Best known for his adventurous nature and joyful spirit, he enjoyed boating, fishing, traveling and especially cheering on the NY Jets with his son as a 28 year season ticket holder. Moreover he had a kind and caring heart with plenty of room for his beloved friends and family. He is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Edith “Geri”; as well as his sister, Cora Best; his brothers, Norman, Charles and Roy Olsen; and son-in-law, Tim Hunter. He will be dearly missed by his loving family which includes his brother, Gerald Olsen, four children, Kathleen (and Joe) Schafer, Paul (and Tina) Olsen; Coralee Hunter and Lou-Ann (and Rob) Bennett; nine grandchildren, Jeanette, Nicole, Kenneth, Allison, Michele, Daniel, Nicholas, Krista and David; one great grandson, Tim. There will be a viewing on Sunday, Aug. 4th from 3PM-6PM in the Spilker Funeral Home, 815 Washington St., Cape May. Mickey’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Aug. 5th at 9:30AM in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 525 Washington St., Cape May. Interment will follow Mass at 2:30PM in Holy Cross Cem., North Arlington, NJ.
