O’BRIEN, CAPTAIN JAMES M., USN (3 War Veteran) On Sunday November 24, 2013 Jim O’Brien of Palm City, Florida peacefully began his eternal life. Born in Philadelphia, PA. in 1920, he graduated from West Catholic HS and then the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943. He served on destroyers in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters in WW2. He became a naval aviator in 1945 and flew combat missions from the aircraft carriers USS Boxer and Valley Forge during the Korean War. He received his M.A. Degree from Stanford University in 1953. He served as Commanding Officer of Navy Attack Squadron 176 and later Executive Officer of the aircraft carrier USS Randolph. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and the Naval War College. He became the Commanding Officer of the USS Pyro in 1964. The following year he took command of the aircraft carrier USS Midway and launched air strikes on North Vietnam. Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he spent 10 years as Vice President of Administration for the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Assoc., in Washington DC. He was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Muriel Devine. He is survived by his younger brothers Jack and Charles, his three children James M. Jr., Coley, and Donna (Hogan), 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
