SMITH, MEGANE
(October 13, 1926 –
July 16, 2017)
Megane Smith, a Cape May Point resident for 35 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 16th, surrounded by her family. Born in South Africa, Megane traveled to New York City in 1951 with her husband, Reginald, to begin an affiliation with the newly formed United Nations. Reginald worked as an economist at the U.N. for 25 years, while Megane worked as the administrative assistant to the Dean of Studies at the United Nations International School. Megane revisited South Africa with her family many times throughout her life and remained a South African citizen until her death.
Megane was an avid gardener, an amateur ornithologist and naturalist, a skilled baker and craftswoman, and an accomplished musician. She retired to Cape May Point in 1982 and became a spirited member of the local community. She served as the Secretary to the Cape May Point Environmental Commission; helped establish the community’s organized recycling efforts; was an early advocate for Dune Day; regularly participated in the Cape May Point Bird Observatory’s monarch butterfly campaigns; and actively supported the Cape May Point Beach Patrol.
She is survived by her daughter, Gillian, two sons, Jeffrey and Neil, and 7 grandchildren. The family will conduct a private remembrance ceremony. Donations in Megane’s memory may be made to:
