MEARS, HAMPTON

MEARS, HAMPTON, 93, or Wildwood Crest passed away November 24, 2013. Hampton was predeceased by his parents, his brother Bert Mears and his twin brother, Wade Mears Sr. He is survived by his nephew, Wade Mears Jr. of California. He graduated from Wildwood High School and was the basketball team’s star player in the 1930s. Hampton guided the Wildwood Warriors to a pair of state championships. After earning 13 college scholarship offers, he attended both Temple and St. Joseph’s before eventually finishing college at the University of Southern California. He was in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran. Mr. Mears taught history in Long Island at Valley Stream High School for 19 years. Hampton recently retired as a scout for the Los Angeles Lakers after 40 years. He befriended longtime Lakers owner Jerry Buss when the two attended college together on the West Coast. Hampton was a generous man who contributed to many local causes. Services are private. Arr: Ingersoll-Greenwood FH
