MATYSZCZAK, JOSEPH D. “Matty”, 82 – of Sea Isle City, NJ passed away June 18, 2017. He was born in Philadelphia, PA and graduated Roman Catholic High School, joined the US Air Force during the Korean War and was assigned as a Catholic Chaplain’s Assistant. After 4 years in the Air Force he went to LaSalle College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and an Internal Audit Certification from the University of Florida.
His career with the Naval Audit Service began in 1962 and progressed to Auditor In Charge of mobile and permanent audit sites in the United States, Europe, and Africa. In 1981 he was selected by the Naval Audit Service as “Auditor of the Year”. He then went on to be selected as Auditor In Charge of the newly opened Branch Offices, first in Naples, Italy and later in London, England. He was responsible for many financial savings to the Navy which resulted from his audits.
He retired from the Naval Audit Service with 34 years of government service and made Sea Isle City his permanent home in 1986. He was a member and usher of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sea Isle City, NJ. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Madonna Maria Council, #3560 Knights of Columbus, and a Life Member of the Monsignor Maroney Assembly.
Joe leaves behind his brother Stephen (Stella); four children: daughter Lori (Anthony), son Joseph, Jr. (Barbara), daughter Nina, and son Nicholas (Laurie); and 8 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother William and his sister, Sr. M. Damien, OSBM and his past companion Dolores DeVecco for 27 years. Also, Joe leaves behind her two children: Earnest (Cheryl) DeVecco and Lisa (Scott) Murray. He also survived by his nephew Stephen (Janet), niece Patricia (Raymond), many cousins, and companion Joan Coll.
Mass of Resurrection will be Friday, June 23, 2017 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 4308 Landis Ave., Sea Isle City, NJ 08243. Viewing will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Cape May County Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s name to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Building Fund.
