MARSH, GLADYS CHANDLER

MARSH, GLADYS CHANDLER Mrs. Gladys Chandler Marsh, 98, wife of the late William Scott Marsh and a resident of Onancock, Va., passed away peacefully into the arms of God and her beloved family, on Saturday, December 5, 2015.Gladys was born in Cashville, Va. on August 31, 1917, to the late Libey Thomas Chandler and Missouri Marshall Chandler. Reared in a God-fearing home, her first priority was always to church and family. She was a loving mother and grandmother, proudly devoting her life to her children and grandchildren. Known as the neighborhood mom, her home was often filled with the love and laughter of many children. In 1964, Gladys and her husband Scott, a ferry boat engineer, moved to Cape May, NJ, due to the ferry boats relocation from the Eastern Shore. Gladys worked as a nurse assistant at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital in Cape May Courthouse, NJ, until her husband’s passing in 1979. Sadly, her return to the Eastern Shore was the beginning of three decades of unbearable loss, burying her three sons and her three siblings during that time. A member of Market Street United Methodist Church since 1939, Gladys was the epitome of a true Christian lady. Through her faith in the Lord, she persevered through unimaginable grief with her head held high. She remained grateful for her lifetime friends and church family who stood by her side, in good times and in bad, and for many, she will be remembered as the face of strength and resilience. In addition to her husband and parents, Gladys was predeceased by her sons, Donald Alexander Marsh, Van Chandler Marsh, and Gary Scott Marsh; her sister, Peggy Chandler Fosque; and two brothers, Horrace Thomas Chandler, and Charles Milton Mickey Chandler. She is survived by four granddaughters, Crystal M. Hart and husband Thomas L. III, of Wachapreague, Va., Tracy M. Johnson and husband Chandler, of Onancock; Vanessa Landis and husband Joseph, of Cape May; and Amy Smith of Baltimore, Md.; eleven great-grandchildren, Tommy, Camryn, Chandler, Macie, Leah, Joey, Ava, Evan, Kylie, Adonyiah, and Anthony; one great-great granddaughter, Madison; a daughter-in-law, Judy Marsh; two nephews, Bobby Wayne and Mike Edwards; three nieces, Carolyn Swecker, Randi Merritt, and Sandy Citro; and four cousins, Leo P. Chandler, Betty Ann Chandler, Catherine Layne, and Fern Parks.A memorial service will be held at the Market Street United Methodist Church on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., with The Reverend Bart Weakley officiating. Private interment will be held prior to the service at the Mount Holly Cemetery. There will be a visitation at Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Market Street United Methodist Church, 75 Market Street, Onancock, Va. 23417, or to Hospice of the Eastern Shore, 165 Market Street, Suite 3, Onancock, Va. 23417.
