MAJOR, BERTHA MAE

MAJOR, BERTHA MAE, born Bertha Mae Jarmon, April 20, 1917 in Berlin, Maryland to George Daniel Riley and Bessie Mae Jarmon (Riley), departed this life Monday, September 2, 2013 at the age of 96. She was a long time resident of the Cape May area and enjoyed the many friends she made throughout the seventy eight years there. She was one of two children; brother George Daniel Riley preceded her in death in June 1965. Married to Paul Wesley Major on April 20, 1935 and from that union they had two children, Paula Mae (Major) McNair of Atlantic City, NJ, and Darlene of West Cape May, NJ. Bertha worked many years in the Philadelphia area as a domestic worker with her mother prior to her marriage to Paul who was employed by the Reading Railroad Train Line as a Porter. Surviving her are her children, Paula, Darlene, Allen of Cape May, and Norton of North Cape May, NJ. One other daughter, Georgette Marie Scott passed away suddenly April 5, 2009. Additionally she leaves behind six granddaughters; and great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and their children. She was often affectionately called Ã’ƒ’ï’¿’½’Ã’¯’ï’¿’½’ï’¿’½’Ã’¯’ï’¿’½’ï’¿’½BertieÃ’ƒ’ï’¿’½’Ã’¯’ï’¿’½’ï’¿’½’Ã’¯’ï’¿’½’ï’¿’½ by her extended family Bea, Fran, Caroline, Stephanie, and Charlie. Services will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Macedonia Baptist Church, Franklin Street and Lafayette Street, Cape May, where viewing will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Interment will be announced at the service.
