MAIER, EVANGELINE SKEGAS, 90

MAIER, EVANGELINE SKEGAS, 90, of Wildwood, NJ passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on September 1, 2017. She was born on March 15, 1927 in New Kensington PA to George and Magdalene Skegas. Evangeline attended Thiel College in Greenville PA where she majored in English and minored in Mathematics. While at Thiel, she met her future husband Kenneth Henry Maier. They married in 1949, and after they graduated, lived and worked for several years in Pittsburgh PA before moving to New York City in the early 1950’s. Ken and Vange started a family while living in New York and Vange stopped working to pursue her most loved occupation, mother to Madeleine, Adrienne and Kenneth. After her children started school, Vange started a new career as a teacher in elementary and middle school. She was one of the first teachers to be trained to teach English as a Second Language and worked for the New York City Board of Education, educating children in several schools in Brooklyn NY. After Ken retired, he and Vange moved to Wildwood where she continued to work, teaching math to students at Wildwood High School. She retired in the late 1980’s. Vange was a member of the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox church and the Wildwood Civic Club. She served on the board of both the St Demetrios Philoptochos and the Civic Club. Vange was also a life long traveler. She visited many countries in her life including Greece, the Holy Land, Egypt, India, Thailand and China. She also visited most US states in her cross country car trips and especially enjoyed visiting the US National Parks. Evangeline is survived by her children, Madeleine Said, Adrienne Sandstedt and Kenneth Maier and their spouses, her granddaughter Ariana Said, her sister Artemis Johnas and her loving nieces and nephews and their families. A viewing will be held on Friday September 15, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210. Funeral services will be on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 321 Saint Demetrios Avenue, North Wildwood, NJ 08260. Interment will be in the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, PO Box 5358, Atlantic City, New Jersey 08404. www.radzieta.com
