HUGHES, ROBERT MILLARD “Muggs”, 77, of Erma, NJ – it’s how everyone knew him, so…Muggs passed away peacefully Friday evening, March 17, 2017. He was born on July 11, 1939 in Mayville in Middle Township, NJ and always claimed to have made the little town famous. His whole life, he was a Court House boy. Muggs got his nickname from a family friend, Hazel Spalding, when he was a small boy. Seems every time he came in from playing outside, his face was filthy. So she started calling him Muggs and it stuck like glue. Muggs was a typical rowdy teen. He loved buying, souping up, and sometimes wrecking cars. Along with his Court House buddies, he loved cruising Stone Harbor and Wildwood and getting in the occasional brawl. While in the National Guard, over a glass of iced tea, he met and fell in love with the young waitress who served it to him, Mary Ann Buganski. She became his wife of 53 years and gave him four children. Muggs joined the Lower Township Police in 1969 and through the 70s, he and his fellow cops loved “cleaning house” in the local bars. He was always a fantastic welder and had his own business. Nobody could weld like Muggs. With his talent and unbelievable ingenuity, he could fix, repair, modify, strengthen, build or even destroy anything. He loved his toys, his little corner of the world, fishing, the meadows, telling great “back in the day” stories and his family. Muggs is predeceased by his parents, Lester and Alberta and his eldest daughter, Sherri Lee. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann, son Scott, daughters Cynthia Martin (Andrew) and Debbie Peabody, his grandchildren Wesley Cubernot, Jr. (Liana), Cameron and Katie Schmeck, Austin Hughes Constant, Abigail Peabody, TJ and Danny Martin, and great granddaughter Ava Cubernot, his brother Lester Hughes , and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Also, a close extended family, Michael Snow and his family. Although Muggs will be missed by his family and friends, sitting around repeating all his stories will keep us smiling and his memory alive. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House, where viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be private.
