HICKMAN JR., CHARLES W

HICKMAN JR., CHARLES W., 75, lifelong resident of Cape May passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 after a hard-fought battle with a short term illness. Charlie graduated from Cape May High School in 1960. He worked as a carpenter in the Cape May community for many years and in his later years he was self-employed and worked under his own name, Hickman’s Carpentry. For those who knew Charlie, he was the infamous “Buttermaker.” He touched the lives of many young adults in the local area by coaching Little League Baseball, Little League Softball and Cape May Street Hockey. He also volunteered his time umpiring many Little League games. Charlie was one of the happiest people you would ever know and always had a smile on his face. He was a sports enthusiast and closely followed local sports and supported the Philadelphia professional teams through thick and thin. Charlie enjoyed music and actually had a really good singing voice, known only to those closest to him. His interests included Civil War Re-Enacting and working on his LGB Garden Railroad. Of all things, Charlie’s love of family and the way he fostered his unique friendships is what he will be remembered the most for by all who will continue to love him. He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Elsie Hickman. Charlie is dearly missed by his loving family which includes his wife of 24 years, Carol (nee Sandgran); four children, Charles (and Jenipher) Hickman, Beth Hickman Edwards, Joseph Roth and Megan (and Leo) Frame; siblings, Philip (and Linda), Shirley (and Joseph) Stefanovicz, Wayne (and Pat), Renee (and John) Hopkin and Michael (and Mary); eight grandchildren, Holly, John (and Erika), Ben, Brinley, Will, Kayleigh, Maddison and Brandon , as well as many nieces and nephews. Charlie’s viewings will take place in the Spilker Funeral Home, 815 Washington St., Cape May on Monday evening from 6pm – 8pm and again on Tuesday morning from 10am – 11am with a time of sharing thoughts, prayers and memories offered by family and friends beginning at 11am. Interment will follow in the Cold Spring Cemetery, Lower Twp. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Caper 10 Alumni Assoc., c/o Loretta Saggiomo, 239 Fourth Ave., West Cape May, NJ 08204. Info and condolences: spilkerfuneralhome.com
