DAVIS, REV. ROBERT O., 90, of Cape May passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2015. Born in Lexington, NC, Rev. Davis has been a resident of Cape May since 1961 after moving here from Portsmouth, Virginia. A man of honor, he served in the United States Army during World War II. He graduated from Virginia Seminary and College (Virginia University at Lynchburg) with a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Divinity degrees. He was the youngest recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity Degree. He also received an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities for efforts in preserving and presenting Afro American life through music and lectures on Africa’s contribution to civilization. For 25 years, he was also employed by the Lower Township Board of Education as a Permanent Substitute Teacher. After retiring, he returned each year during Black History Month to lecture on Africa’s contribution to World’s civilization and to display his African Artifacts. In October 1961, Rev. Davis became pastor of the Macedonia Baptist Church, Cape May, which grew spiritually and numerically. He retired in 2009. During his tenure, he organized the Entertainment and Education committee, Progressive Workers, organized and directed the Macedonia Concert Choir that for 45 years, sang traditional Negro Spirituals at Convention Hall in Cape May. Rev. Davis was also a tenor soloist with the famed Wings Over Jordan Choir. He is predeceased by his brothers, Charles and John, Jr. Rev. Davis is dearly missed by his loving family which includes his wife of 56 years, Carolyn (nee King); two sons, Robert O. Davis, Jr. and his wife, Rosiland and Kendall Davis; two grandchildren, Mariah and Robert, III. Visitation will take place on Saturday (JAN. 9th) from 9am to 10:45am in the First Assembly of God Church, 1068 Seashore Rd., Cape May with funeral services to follow and begin at 11am.
