COTTMAN, WALTER J., 77, of Wildwood, NJ departed this life on Saturday, August 10, 2013, at VITAS Methodist Inpatient Unit at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Born in North Wildwood, NJ he was the third son of the late Walter J. Cottman, Sr. and Helen (Waters) Cottman, He was educated in the Wildwood Public Schools. He continued his education and received a BA from Morgan State University. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge and later pursued his Master’s at Glassboro State College/ Rowan University. Walter J. was a member of the Wildwood Police Department and the first African American City Councilman. He was a supervisor at the Woodbine Developmental Center and New Jersey Veteran’s Home. Upon his retirement, he was employed with the Wildwood Convention Center. Walter J. was also a member of Omega Psi Phi, Incorporated. He is survived by his daughter, Marquita Camper of Bowie, MD; a brother, William G. Cottman, Sr. (Barbara) of Whitesboro, NJ and a sister, Caroline E. Copeland (Willie) of Philadelphia, PA. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, godchildren and a host of family and friends. He was predeceased by brothers, John and Charles. Viewing will be held Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 46 East Atlantic Ave., Cape May Court House, NJ where friends may call from 9:00 AM ” 11:00 AM followed by Funeral services with Rev. Andrea Davis of Asbury AME officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Olive Baptist Cemetery, Swainton, NJ.
