BENNUNG, DEVRA R. (nee Todd), 86, of Cape May passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, October 27, 2013. Devra was a longtime summer resident of Cape May before moving here permanently in 1998 from Media, PA. She graduated from Overbrook High School in Philadelphia. She was the co-founder; secretary and treasurer of Acrymax Technologies, Inc in Media, PA. She was a member of the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May, the Beach Club of Cape May and the Cape May Cottagers Association. She will be forever remembered and loved for being a devoted wife, a loving mother and the best Mom-Mom to her grandchildren. Whether on the porch of her Victorian home in Cape May or in front of the grand stone fireplace in her home in Media, PA she was most happy when surrounded by family and friends. She lovingly opened her homes to create lasting memories for all. In the early 60s Devra and her husband, Karl arrived in Cape May. Initially, they lived on their boat at the present day South Jersey Marina. Karl would go fishing and she would take the children to the beach. Unfortunately when the fishing was good the house would not be there when she returned with her sandy and sunburned children. She finally put her foot down and told her husband that they either bought a real house or she would not be coming with him to the shore. Instead of buying just any house they bought a large Victorian known as the Ludlum House on Kearny and Jefferson Street. She spent a great deal of time researching the history of the house and made sure to keep the historic features of the house intact. On several occasions she opened it to the public for house tours to benefit the Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts. A gracious hostess that loved to entertain she created a warm and loving home for her family and her large extended family of friends in Cape May. Devra took great pride in her heritage. Originally from the Eastern Shore of Maryland she shared this heritage with her children and grandchildren giving them all the gift of ties that bind. On the third weekend of October for over thirty years her family has gathered on Tilghman Island, Maryland to renew those ties and make new ones as the family has grown. She will be missed but the traditions she helped create will endure. She is predeceased by her husband, Karl Bennung and her young son, Karl. Devra will be dearly missed by her loving family which includes her four children, Faith (and Jim) Pittman, Scott (and Kathleen) Bennung, Hope (and Ken) Perry and Heather (and Jeff) Robinson; one brother, Wildie Todd; ten grandchildren, Melissa (and Archie), Eric, James, Rachel, Ally, David, Jack, Julia, Laura and Brooke. Devras memorial service will take place on Saturday (Nov. 2nd) at 11:30AM in the Cape May United Methodist Church, 635 Washington St., Cape May where friends will be received from 10AM to 11:30AM. Interment will take place on Friday (Nov. 1st) at 11AM in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested in Devras memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 3551 N. Broad St., Phila., PA 19140 (Spilker Funeral Home, Cape May) info and condolences: www.spilkerfuneralhome.com
