ARMSTRONG, JAMES C., 81, of Clermont, NJ died on June 16, after a long illness. James was born in Parkersburg, WV, on 6/22/31. He was an Eagle Scout and accepted an ROTC scholarship to Duke University. He graduated in 1953 with a bachelors degree in Physics, and served for three years in the US Navy, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. During his active duty in the Korean War, he was the navigator of the USS Soley, a destroyer, which conducted an around-the-world cruise. After completing his service, in 1960 he earned a Doctor of Philosophy studying Nuclear Physics at the University of Pittsburgh. He taught physics at the University of Maryland before entering government service, where he worked at the Defense Intelligence Agency and the US Postal Service. In 1972, he moved to AT&T, where he was involved in various roles in corporate policy and strategic planning. While at AT&T he became an associate professor of business at Pace University, and after leaving AT&T in 1988 he was the inaugural Bell Atlantic Chair for Telecommunications at Temple Universitys School of Communication and Theater. James enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes, his beloved cats, bird watching, astronomy, and all things nature. He was adept at problem solving and puzzles of all kinds. After retiring, he was an associate naturalist at the Cape May Bird Observatory, and was honored as a master naturalist. He was active in St. Marys Episcopal Church in Stone Harbor, NJ. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Valentine McMillan of Clermont, and two children, James, and Lillian, of Cape May Court House, and his brother William of Parkersburg. In lieu of flowers, James requested contributions to St. Marys Episcopal Church Stone Harbor, or New Jersey Audubon. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 9425 Third Avenue, Stone Harbor, NJ 08247, where a visitation hour will begin at 10:00 a.m. Inurnment will be in St. Mary’s Church Columbarium.
